With hurricane season in full swing and Tropical Storm Hermine proving just how detrimental these storms can be, Huemor is joining the cause to promote the importance of disaster and storm preparedness with one goal in mind, keeping the community safe.

United Way’s Mission

This summer, we partnered up with neighboring nonprofit United Way Long Island, in collaboration with PSEG Long Island and 2-1-1 Long Island, to build United Way is an organization that “advances the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the three key building blocks of education, financial stability and health.” We value its mission, and couldn’t be more excited to say we became a part of it with the BeReadyLI initiative. designed by Huemor

The BeReadyLI Initiative

The BeReadyLI initiative is about providing Long Island residents with disaster and storm preparedness tools, and the website does just that. The launch date was accelerated for the forecast of Tropical Storm Hermine, National Preparedness Month in September and the upcoming 4th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Being that Superstorm Sandy left many areas of Long Island devastated and put many of our fellow Long Islanders’ lives on hold, this project hit home. It was provided at a reduced cost for the non-profit effort.

Because of the website’s purpose, if there’s one thing this website should absolutely be, it’s accessible. Built to meet broad accessibility standards, it’s user-friendly to those with disabilities by being fully interactive and comprehensive. “We went through a few iterations of the design, ultimately coming to a final version that provides the necessary sense of urgency for storm and disaster preparedness without being overbearing or intimidating,” says our designer Amie. “A lot of time was spent coming up with a design that is accessible for a wide range of users, including unique options such as contrast-control and legibility options.”

Preparation Resources

Throughout the website, visitors will find readiness checklists and tips, news, alerts, and educational resources. It also includes a preparedness quiz to train residents in a variety of disaster scenarios. When an answer is wrong, the right answer with an explanation is provided. This way, residents have every chance to be fully prepared. Quiz

Contributing features include national weather tracking, a power outage map updated continually, recovery locations and contacts, a children’s education center featuring Sesame Street characters, and tips for specific scenarios, such as storms, power outages, fires, and release of hazardous materials.
